| Illustrate the meaning of three idioms you have learned, by describing real-life situations that happened to people you know (a friend, an acquaintance, a family member).

| 1. A head like a sieve I have a head like a sieve sometimes, and this was proven to me in February. I had bought a ticket to the theatre for my favorite musical, which I have been listening to for two years already. I was so excited about it! But somehow, I completely forgot about the performance as time went by. I only remembered about it a week after it had already taken place. I was so upset with myself for missing it, but my memory is truly terrible sometimes.
2. A heart of gold My friend has a heart of gold. She is always ready to stand up for me no matter what happens. If someone hurts my feelings or treats me unfairly, she is the first person to defend me and put things right. I'm very lucky to have her in my life.
3. Her heart is in the right place My mum is an extremely responsible person, and I would say her heart's in the right place. Apart from her main job, she works as a volunteer psychologist at a crisis oncology centre. The centre focuses on providing psychological support to cancer patients and their relatives. She dedicates her free time to helping people who are going through the hardest moments of their lives.

| My friend Dasha has a travel bug. Recently she was in Dubai. Then she flew to Istanbul, from Istanbul she went to Antalya. When I asked her why she travels so much, she said: «There is so much to see, and I don't want to waste time».
My friend Olya is a social butterfly. Last week we went to a cafe where she didn't know anyone. In ten minutes she was already chatting with strangers at the next table and exchanging phone numbers with one girl. Everyone around her was smiling.
My friend Misha used to be a wallflower. At school he never raised his hand, never spoke first, and sat quietly in the back row. Teachers loved him for his calmness.
My friend Katya is a dark horse. She never told me much about what she does. But sometimes | learned completely unusual details about her life. For example, once she mentioned that she had hitchhiked through several northern cities of Russia. Another time she casually said that she used to collect fossils. Every time I think I know her, she surprises me again.
I am a live wire. I wake up full of energy and have so many ideas. I love all kinds of activities: hiking, dancing, playing sports. I walk a lot and talk to people everywhere I go. I have many hobbies: snowboarding, skiing, skating, cycling, horse riding. I also like drawing, reading, singing, and swimming. And the people around me are just as active as I am.
My friend Sasha is a party animal. She loves all kinds of parties and goes to them often. Sometimes she goes out several times a week. Last week she went to three different parties and came back with new friends and funny stories.

| 1. An awkward customer
This idiom means someone who is difficult to deal with or please. It doesn’t always mean a real customer in a shop. It can be anyone who makes interactions uncomfortable.
I have a few colleagues at work who are exactly this. Every time I try to talk to them about a simple task, they get defensive or sarcastic. For example, last week I asked one of them to pass me a tape. She rolled her eyes and said, “Can’t you do it yourself?” I wasn’t even asking for much. It’s difficult for me to interact with them every so often. They are not bad people, but definitely awkward customers.
2. A heart of gold
This idiom describes someone who is kind, generous, and caring, even if they don’t show it in obvious ways.
My friend, let’s call him Daniel, has a heart of gold. He is not rich, but he always offers to buy things for me or other friends. Once, I forgot my wallet at home, and he bought me lunch without even asking for the money back. Another time, a friend needed new jeans , and Dan just bought them. He never makes a big deal out of it. He just smiles and says, “Don’t worry about it.” That’s what a heart of gold looks like.
3. A nasty piece of work
This idiom means a person who is unpleasant, mean, or even cruel. You want to stay away from them.
I met a girl at my work in a warehouse. She is about three years older than me. Every time we work together, she is furious and aggressive. She shouts at people for small mistakes, complains about everything, and gossips behind people’s backs. Once, she worked with some fresh men and started screaming at them too loudly. She is so toxic that I can’t stand her. I try to avoid working the same shift as her. Honestly, she is a nasty piece of work.

| My classmate was a teacher’s pet. He always sat in the first desk. He raised his hand before the teacher finished the question. He often stayed after class and cleaned the blackboard. Nobody liked him, but he didn’t notice. So it was not surprising to hear the whisper: "Of course he is answering again. Such a teacher's pet."
When we moved in our new flat 10 years ago everything was great. But 2 years later our neighbour in the flat above ours started coughing. Every night — loudly. Not a normal cough, actually. I couldn't sleep, because he coughed mostly in the evening. But my parents didn’t hear him, because his room is exactly above mine. My brother visited us and after one night he said: "Your neighbour is a real pain in the neck."
My cat Frost is the biggest lazy-bones I have ever seen. He refuses to chew his food. I have to buy him pare because dry food is too much work for his teeth. Once, a fly got into the room. Frost opened one eye. He watched it for five minutes. Then ten minutes. The fly flew around the whole room. Frost didn't move. Only when the fly came right to his nose, he slowly raised his paw and tried to catch it. He usually misses. But sometimes he gets interested, and then he can play with it for hours. Then he closes his eyes and falls back asleep. But he's quite funny and curious:)
